Steve’s Real Food Dog Food Recall – Salmonella Risk

Steve’s Real Food of Salt Lake City, Utah, has voluntarily recalled one lot of its 5-lb. Raw Frozen Dog Food Turkey Canine Recipe because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.  This recall was initiated after Steve’s Real Food was notified by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture that a retail sample was collected and tested positive for Salmonella. To date, no pet or human illnesses have been reported.

The potentially affected lot of 5-lb. frozen turkey nuggets were distributed to retail pet food stores in 21 states — California, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. Fifty two cases of this product was distributed between 6/27/17 – 7/15/17. Product affected by this recall is identified with the following lot number, UPC code and “best by” date on the bag:

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products. Symptoms of infection in people include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Consumers are encouraged to check the lot code of any 5-lb. Raw Frozen Dog Food Turkey Canine Recipe product they have purchased. Any product found to display the lot code/UPC/best by date above should be returned to the specialty retailer where it was purchased for a full refund.
