Northwest Naturals Dog Food Recall – Listeria Risk

 

Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon has recalled 5-lb. frozen Chicken & Salmon Recipe pet food chubs because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can affect animals eating the products and pose a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products. Healthy people exposed to Listeria monocytogenes should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever. To date, no pet or human illnesses have been reported.

The recalled product is packaged in 5-lb. frozen chubs labeled Chicken & Salmon Recipe, with a UPC code of 0-87316-38440-6 and a product best buy date code of 15-082218. The product was sent to distributors in California, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington, and is sold thru specialty pet retail stores. Consumers are encouraged to check the lot code on any 5-lb. frozen Chicken & Salmon Recipe chubs. Any product with the noted lot code should be returned to the specialty retailer where purchased for a full refund.

The company was notified on 2-21-2018 by FDA and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development that 1 chub purchased at a Michigan specialty pet store was tested and found to be negative for e colisalmonella, and positive for Listeria moncytogenes. Northwest Naturals tests all batches of products for all pathogens in a positive release program before releasing for shipping. The recalled product passed lab testing on 12-22-2016 and was sold over 1 year ago to distributors in states listed above, on or before 1-23-2017.
