Northwest Naturals of Portland, Oregon, is voluntarily recalling two lots of raw pet food due to Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The recall includes 53 cases (1,272 lbs.) of Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe and 19 cases (684 lbs.) of Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe.

According to the company announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the contamination was identified after product samples were collected and tested by the FDA.
The Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe tested positive for Salmonella, while the Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this voluntary recall.
Health Risk Information
Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes can affect animals that eat contaminated pet products, and people can be at risk from handling contaminated products, particularly if they do not thoroughly wash their hands after contact with the products, surfaces exposed to the products, or infected animals.
Pets infected with Salmonella or Listeria monocytogenes may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
Some pets may have decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected pets that otherwise appear healthy can be carriers and infect other animals or people.
People infected with Salmonella may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever.
In some cases, Salmonella infection can result in more serious illness.
Listeria monocytogenes can rarely cause illness and death in people and animals.
Symptoms of infection in people can include confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, headache, fever, muscle aches, lethargy, anorexia, nausea, and diarrhea.
Pregnant women, newborns, adults ages 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness.
Consumers whose pets have eaten the recalled products and are experiencing symptoms should contact their veterinarian.
Anyone experiencing symptoms after handling contaminated pet products should contact their healthcare provider.
What Consumers Should Do
Consumers who purchased products from the affected lots should stop feeding them to their pets and return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The announcement also reminds consumers that safe handling is essential with all raw pet food. Anyone handling raw pet food should:
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after contact.
- Clean and sanitize surfaces, bowls, utensils, and storage areas that come into contact with the product.
- Keep raw pet food separate from human food.
- Store raw pet food frozen or refrigerated until use.
