On July 29, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Do Not Feed Advisory for multiple lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, which tested positive for E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella.
The advisory was issued after FDA reviewed third-party testing data linked to a serious illness in a child and additional contamination findings.
Company and Product Details:
- Arrow Reliance, Inc. (dba Darwin’s Natural Pet Products)
Seattle, Washington
The affected products include frozen raw dog food sold through Darwin’s online subscription service.
Unopened packages from three different product lots tested positive for dangerous pathogens:
- Beef Recipe for Dogs (2-pound size, Lot 10662, MFG Date: May 30, 2024) – E. coli O157:H7
- Chicken Recipe for Dogs (2-pound size, Lot 10683, MFG Date: June 5, 2024) – Salmonella Infantis
- Duck Recipe for Dogs (2-pound size, Lot 10638, MFG Date: May 22, 2024) – Salmonella Hadar
These products were packaged in frozen, clear and white plastic pouches and do not contain expiration dates, which increases the risk that affected products may still be in consumer freezers.
Public Health Impact:
According to the FDA, one affected lot was linked to a serious case of illness in a four-year-old child, who developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) after exposure to E. coli O157:H7.
Genetic sequencing confirmed a match between the child’s stool sample and the contaminated beef dog food from the household freezer.
The family dog, who exclusively consumed Darwin’s pet food, also showed signs of illness prior to the child’s infection, though symptoms were resolved without veterinary treatment.
Although the FDA recommended that Arrow Reliance initiate a voluntary recall of the affected lots, the company has not issued a recall at this time.
What Consumers Should Do:
The FDA reminds consumers that freezing does not kill E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella.
There is currently no recall in place for these products. If consumers have any of the affected lots, they are advised to:
- Do not feed the food to pets
- Do not donate the food
- Dispose of it in a secure container where other animals, including wildlife, cannot access it
