Dear NASC Members,

One of NASC’s top priorities is to advance the Animal Health Supplement Act, which is proposed federal legislation that would establish a permanent legal framework for animal health supplements in the United States.

Although our industry has operated successfully for decades without a legal category, existing under FDA enforcement discretion is not ideal and we are acutely aware that the regulatory environment could change with a shift in agency policy, creating uncertainty for manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, and consumers alike.

The Animal Health Supplement Act is designed to provide the long-term regulatory certainty our industry needs to continue growing and innovating. If enacted, the legislation would establish a clear legal category for animal health supplements based on intended use, while creating a framework for product listing, quality manufacturing, labeling, claims, and adverse event reporting.

Much like the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) did for human dietary supplements, this legislation would provide a stable foundation for our industry while preserving access to products that support the health and well-being of companion animals.

Over the past several months, NASC has been working closely with federal legislators and has engaged experienced legal and advocacy professionals to help move this initiative forward. While there is still important work ahead, we continue to make meaningful progress and are encouraged by the support we’ve received throughout the industry.

When the time is right, NASC will launch a coordinated advocacy campaign and ask manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, veterinarians, pet owners, and other stakeholders to help advance the legislation by contacting their members of Congress. Your voice will be an important part of this effort.
